Let \(p\) be an odd prime, and let \(f\in S_k(\Gamma_0(N))\) be a normalized newform. Let \(\alpha\) be the (admissible) root of the \(p\)-Hecke polynomial for \(f\). Let \(L_p(f,\alpha;\chi)\) denote the corresponding \(p\)-adic \(L\)-function on the group \(X\) of \(p\)-adic continuous characters on \(\mathbb Z^*_p\). If \(f\) is ordinary at \(p\), then the author applies an ultrametric analogue of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem to give a new proof of the fact that \(L_p(f,\alpha;-)\) does not vanish identically over \(\mathbb Z_p\) (naturally embedded in \(X\)). In the superangular case (assuming \(p\geq 5)\) he proves, using infinite-dimensional \(p\)-adic analysis, that J\(L_p(f,\alpha;\chi)\) has finite order of vanishing at any character of the form \(\widetilde\chi_s(x)= x^s\) (in particular, at any point of \(\mathbb Z_p\hookrightarrow X\)).
