The book contains 16 chapters, 18 references, 4 appendices, a subject index and an author index. It is well-known that the theory of elasticity is an introduction to the mechanics of deformable solids, and this justifies a deep consideration of the classical elasticity undertaken in this book. The author has more than 50 years experience as Professor of mechanics at the University of Bucharest, Romania, and some of the results in the book are original. The first eight chapters treat the geometry and kinematics of deformation, the mechanics of stresses, mathematical models in mechanics of deformable solids, general equations, principles and theorems of the theory of elasticity, computation methods, the theory of Cosserat-type bodies and the theory of concentrated loads. The next four chapters describe static and dynamic spatial problems and their solutions by the method of potential functions. Two chapters are devoted to particular cases of stressed states as well as to anisotropic and non-homogeneous bodies. Finally, the two last chapters give an introduction to thermoelasticity and linear viscoelasticity. An appendix contains elements of tensor calculus, curvilinear coordines, the theory of distributions and some special integrals. The book includes many elaborated problems and can be of interest to mathematicians, physicists, engineers and students.
