Basic coset geometries (Q1762444)

This paper studies certain classes of incidence geometries. In an earlier paper, the authors give a characterization of pregeometries which are basic in the sense that these pregeometries do not admit non-degenerate quotients relative to two different kinds of quotient operations: imprimitive quotients and normal quotients. This constructs a faithful group action that is primitive or quasiprimitive, respectively, on the set of elements of each type. For each such O'Nan-Scott type primitive group, the authors construct a new infinite family of geometries which are thick and admit flag-transitive automorphism groups. The paper gives a negative answer to the question as to whether there is an upper bound for the rank of any thick flag-transitive geometry preserved by a group of this type.
