The article proves a conjecture on regular linear differential-algebraic equations made in an earlier work of the author [Result. Math. 45, 88--105 (2004; Zbl 1060.34002)]. It is assumed that the differential-algebraic equation is of the form \(A(Dx)'+Bx=q\) containing \(m\) equations for the unknown \(x(t)\in \mathbb R^n\) and with \(\text{ ker} A(t)\oplus\text{ im} D(t)=\mathbb R^n\), i.e., it has a properly stated leading term in the terminology of the author. In the above mentioned article, a solvability theory is developed for such equations on the basis of the notion of a tractability index. Now it is shown that this theory leads to a complete decomposition of the equation into independent characteristic components via decoupling projectors.
