The naive definition of de Rham cohomology for rigid analytic spaces, as derived from the complex of differential forms, suffers from serious drawbacks, such as infinite dimensionality and problems with integration. The author developed a solution to these problems using his notion of dagger spaces [J. Reine Angew. Math. 519, 73--95 (2000; Zbl 0945.14013); Duke Math. J. 113, No. 1, 57--91 (2002; Zbl 1057.14023)], and extends it here to a more general situation in which the rigid analytic space \(X\) is not necessarily smooth or the dagger construction doesn't work for some other reason. The idea is to embed \(X\) into the rigid space of a dagger space and consider cohomology of the complex of differential forms on the dagger space pulled back to \(X\). With this definition, which is shown to be compatible with known cases, the author extends finite dimensionality to a large class of rigid spaces. Gysin sequences and the relation to Berthelot's rigid cohomology are also discussed.
