The authors deal with the Cauchy problem for weakly hyperbolic systems of differential operators of the form \((-D^2_0 I_N + A (x, D'))u=f\) in \({\mathbb R}^{1+n}_x = {\mathbb R}_{x_0}\times {\mathbb R}^n_{x'}\) where \(D_0=-i\frac{\partial}{\partial x_0}\), \(D'=(D_1, \ldots, D_n)\), \(D_m=-i\frac{\partial}{\partial x_m}\), \(I_N\) denotes the \(N\times N\) identity matrix and \(A(x, D')\) is an \(N\times N\) matrix of second order differential operators with smooth coefficients. The main result of this paper is a proof of \(C^\infty\)-well posedness for that problem under some natural conditions.
