The paper is devoted to the existence of extremal functions for the optimal \(L^2\)-Nash inequality; it follows the paper [\textit{E. Humbert}, Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A, Math. 131, No. 3, 621--646 (2001; Zbl 1040.53048)], in which the existence of a second best constant in the \(L^2\)-Nash inequality was proved. The proof of existence, though technical, provides illustrative analytic methods applicable, e.g., for the study of concentration phenomena.
