A theorem of Aliprantis and Burkinshaw states that if \(E\) is Banach lattice such that its norm and the norm of its topological dual \(E'\) are order continuous, then each positive Dunford-Pettis operator from \(E\) into itself is compact. Motivated by this theorem, the authors find necessary and sufficient conditions which yield the compactness of a positive Dunford-Pettis operator on a Banach lattice. They prove the following results. Let \(E, F\) be Banach lattices. Theorem: Suppose that \(E'\) is discrete and has an order continuous norm. Then each positive Dunford-Pettis operator \(T : E \rightarrow F\) is compact. Theorem: If \(E\) is order \(\sigma\)-complete, then each positive Dunford-Pettis operator \(T: E \rightarrow E\) is compact iff the norms of \(E\) and \(E'\) are order continuous. Theorem: For each positive Dunford-Pettis operator \(T: E \rightarrow E\), \(T^2\) is compact iff the norm of \(E'\) is order continuous.
