For a finite Galois field extension of Galois group \(G\) the crossed product algebra \((L/K,f)\) with a 2-cocycle \(f\colon G\times G\to L\) (i.e. it satisfies \(f_{\alpha,\beta\gamma}\alpha(f_{\beta,\gamma})=f_{\alpha\beta,\gamma}f_{\alpha,\beta}\) for all \(\alpha,\beta,\gamma\in G\) and \(f_{\alpha,\beta}=1\) if \(\alpha=1\) or \(\beta=1\)) is defined as the additive group \(\bigoplus_{\alpha\in G}Lu_\alpha\) with multiplication \((xu_\alpha)(yu_\beta)=x\alpha(y)f_{\alpha,\beta}u_{\alpha\beta}\). The author generalizes the classical construction of crossed product algebras to the case of finite separable field extensions. A lot of work in the literature has been devoted to the study of the question of when crossed product orders are Azumaya, maximal or hereditary. Here the author presents some properties of rings graded by groupoids, which are used to determine when analogous constructions of crossed product orders are Azumaya, maximal or hereditary orders in a local situation. Results of Haile, Larson and Sweedler are extended to this context, where the generalizations of crossed product algebras are rings graded by groupoids.
