Problem 30 in \textit{K. R. Goodearl}'s book [Partially ordered abelian groups with interpolation. AMS, Providence (1986; Zbl 0589.06008)] asks whether every partially ordered simple abelian group can be embedded into a simple Riesz group. Wehrung gave a positive answer using cofinal embeddings and model-theoretic constructions. The first main result of this paper is that an ordered simple group of rank one which is not Riesz can be embedded into a simple Riesz group of rank one if and only if it is not isomorphic to the additive group of rationals with the natural ordering. The authors focus their attention on simple groups of rank one as basic building blocks for their further constructions. They construct inductive limits of proper intervals having a multiple that coincides with the positive cone. A host of examples and counterexamples are also considered. In a final section the authors explore the potential applications of their results to the \(K\)-theory of multiplier algebras of simple \(C^*\)-algebras with zero real rank.
