The derivation of a diffusive-hyperbolic system in which the viscosity term carries a physical meaning is developed in this paper in the framework of the thermodynamics with internal state variables. In Section 2 the local balance of the energy is described, together with the local unbalance of the entropy. The compatibility of the set of the constitutive equations with the basic principles of nonequilibrium thermodynamics derive, in Section 3, the corresponding thermodynamic restrictions. In Section 4, the system of governing equations of the one-dimensional rigid heat conductor is proved to be hyperbolic and genuinely nonlinear. A set of material functions is examined, in order to prove that no physical shock can be observed. The paper concludes with the comparison of the hyperbolic system obtained with other hyperbolic models of heat conduction.
