Within the scope of this paper, a Jacobi matrix is a symmetric tridiagonal matrix with positive off-diagonal entries. The following problem is considered: Given a \(k\times k\) Jacobi matrix \(J_k\), scalars \(\lambda, \mu\) and vectors \(x_2, y_2\) of length \(n-k\), find an \(n\times n\) Jacobi matrix \(J_n\) such that: (1) \(J_k\) is the leading \(k\times k\) principal submatrix matrix of \(J_n\); (2) \(J_n\) has eigenpairs \((\lambda,x)\) and \((\mu,y)\), where the trailing \(n-k\) entries of \(x\) and \(y\) correspond to \(x_2\) and \(y_2\), respectively. The authors provide equivalent conditions for the (unique) solvability of this problem in terms of determinants. The paper is concluded by an algorithm for computing \(J_n\), \(x\), \(y\), and an \(8\times 8\) example.
