This paper is concerned with the existence of projections of \(CV_p(G)\) onto \(CV_p(H)\) where \(G\) is a locally compact group and \(H\) is one of its closed subgroups. We recall for the nonexpert that \(CV_p(G)\) usually denotes the Banach algebra of all convolution operators on \(L^p(G)\), and that \(CV_p(G)\) contains distinguished subspaces such as \(cv_p(G)\), the norm closure of the set of all convolution operators with compact support, and \(PM_p(G)\) the subspace of \(CV_p(G)\) consisting of \(p\)-pseudomeasures (which for \(p=2\) coincides with the von Neumann algebra of \(G\)). The existence of projections of \(CV_p(G)\) (resp. \(cv_p(G)\), \(PM_p(G)\)) onto \(CV_p(H)\) (resp. \(cv_p(H)\), \(PM_p(H)\)), has been studied with some detail in the literature with positive results under suitable conditions on \(G\) and/or \(H\). We can for instance quote the papers \textit{A. T.-M. Lau} and \textit{V. Losert} [Pac. J. Math. 123, 149--159 (1986; Zbl 0591.43004)], \textit{C. Herz} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 271, 316--318 (1968; Zbl 0195.13802)], \textit{N. Lohoué} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. A 278, 1543--1545 (1974; Zbl 0293.43003)] or \textit{J. Delaporte} and \textit{A. Derighetti} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 129, 1427--1435 (2001; Zbl 0957.43001)]. This paper can be regarded as a continuation of the latter reference in that it imposes conditions exclusively on \(H\), while Herz's and Lohoué's projection theorems required as well some countability assumptions on \(G\). The main theorem of the paper proves, for discrete and amenable \(H\) and arbitrary \(G\), the existence of a contractive projection \(\mathcal{Q}\) of \(CV_p(G)\) onto \(CV_p(H)\) such that \(\text{supp}\: \mathcal{Q}(T)\subset \text{supp}\: T\) for every \(T\in CV_p(G)\). By this last property, the restriction of \(\mathcal{Q}\) also provides a contractive projection of \(cv_p(G)\) onto \(cv_p(H)\).
