The author shows how the combinatorics of matroids and the geometry and topology of toric hyperkähler varieties are closely related. In analogy to the role played by toric varieties in \textit{R. P. Stanley's} proof [Adv. Math.\ 35, 236--238 (1980; Zbl 0427.52006)] of the necessity of the reviewer's \(g\)-inequalities, the author's two proofs of the injectivity part of the hard Lefschetz theorem for toric hyperkähler varieties implies the \(g\)-inequalities for rationally representable matroids. The first proof, with results of \textit{M. K. Chari} [Trans.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 349, 3925--3943 (1997; Zbl 0889.52013)], yields the \(g\)-inequalities for general matroid complexes, first shown by \textit{E. Swartz} [J.\ Comb. Theory, Ser. B 88, 369--375 (2003; Zbl 1033.52011)]. The second proof has consequences for the \(g\)-inequalities on pure \(O\)-sequences.
