      This paper is based on a series of lectures given by the author at the Erwin Schrödinger Institute in Vienna, Austria. It contains 9 Sections in which the main goal is to give the main steps of the proof of Carleson's theorem on almost everywhere convergence of the truncated Fourier transform on the real line, following the method developed by the author and \textit{C. Thiele} in [``A proof of boundedness of the Carleson operator'', Math. Res. Lett. 7, No. 4, 361--370 (2000; Zbl 0966.42009)]. The paper is very well written and highly recommended for beginners on the topic, since it goes directly to the main estimates, starting by very simple comments and observations and leaving for the reader many exercises written in every section as complements. It also gives a historical overview of how this topic has been developed and it contains an extended Section 9 on related topics and open questions which gives an idea of how the situation on this topic is in our days.
