The function \(f: A\to\mathbb{R}\) \((A\subset \mathbb R\)) is said to be symmetrically differentiable at a point \(x\in\mathbb{R}\) if the limit \(\lim_{h\to 0}(f(x+ h)- f(x- h))/2h\) exists, taking \(h\) from the set \(\{h\in\mathbb{R}: x\pm h\in A\}\) and this set has an accumulation point at \(0\). The author shows: Let \(f: A\to\mathbb{R}\), where \(A\) has the Baire property (\(A\) is measurable), have a positive symmetric derivative everywhere on the set \(A\). Then there is an open set \(G\) such that \(A\setminus G\) is meager and \(f\) is increasing on each component of \(G\) (\(f\) is locally increasing at almost every point of \(A\)). The above assertions generalize known results. Also an example of a continuous function with symmetric derivative zero everywhere, which is not monotonic, is given.
