      This paper concerns a necessary condition for \(H^\infty\) well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a degenerate parabolic equation of the form \(Pu = f\) for a linear partial differential operator \[ P=\partial_t + \sum_{j=1}^m\mu_j(D_j^2+x_j^2 D_n^2) +\sum_{j=m+1}^{m+\ell}D_j^2+\sum_{j=1}^n b_j(x)D_j + c(x) \] in a neighborhood of the origin, where all coefficients are smooth and bounded on \({\mathbb R}^n\), \(0 < m+\ell <n,\) \(D_j = \frac 1i\frac {\partial}{\partial x_j}\) \((j = 1,\dots,n),\) and \(\mu_j\) \((j=1,\dots,m)\) are positive constants. Note that \(P\) is degenerate at \((0,e_n)\) \((e_n =(0,\dots,0,1))\). The Cauchy problem is said to be \(H^\infty\) well-posed, if one can choose a positive number \(\delta > 0\) such that, for any \(\tau \in (0,\delta]\) and for any \(f \in C^0([-\delta,0]; H^\infty)\) with \(f = 0\) in \(t \leqq -\tau\), there exists a unique solution \(u \in C^1([-\delta,0];H^\infty)\) with \(u = 0\) in \(t \leqq -\tau\) of \(Pu=f\), and for any \(p \in \mathbb N\) there exist \(q\in\mathbb N\) and a constant \(C\) independent of \(\tau\) satisfying \[ \| u(t,\cdot)\|_p \leqq C\int_{-\tau}^t\| f(s,\cdot)\|_q\;ds\;\text{ for } t\in (-\tau,0], \] where \(\|\cdot\|_p\) denotes the \(H^p\)-norm. The author obtains a necessary condition: \(| \text{Re } b_n(0)| \leqq \sum_{j=1}^m\mu_j.\)
