Let \(\partial N\) be the boundary of a complex manifold \(N\). A CR deformation of \(\partial N\) is fillable if it is still the boundary of a complex manifold. Assume that \(N\) is an open submanifold of a complex manifold \(V\). A fillable deformation of \(\partial N\) is {stable} if it can be realized as a deformation of the real hypersurface \(\partial N\) in \(V\). These questions are examined in the case where \(V\) is a complex projective space. They have been investigated by \textit{G. K. Kiremidjian} [Math. Ann. 242, 1--19 (1979; Zbl 0386.53026)] when the Levi form has either \(0\) or at least \(2\) positive eigenvalues, by \textit{R. S. Hamilton} [J. Differ. Geom. 12, 1--45 (1977; Zbl 0394.32010)] in the case where the Levi form of \(N\) has either \(0\) or at least two negative eigenvalues. The remaining case is that in which the Levi form has exactly one positive eigenvalue. The case of \(n=2\), i.e. \(S^3\subset\mathbb C P^2\) has been discussed e.g. by \textit{J. Bland} and \textit{C. L. Epstein} [J. Algebr. Geom. 5, No. 2, 277--368 (1996; Zbl 0851.32012)]. The author showed in [Invent. Math. 148, No. 3, 545--607 (2002; Zbl 1040.53061)] that the answer is always negative for signature \((1,1)\). Here he generalizes this result to higher dimension: he proves that in general the filling problem, for signature \((1,n-1)\) \((n\geq 2)\) has an obstruction space of infinite dimension. Moreover he gives criteria in terms of the vanishing of some Fourier coefficients of a related expansion, in order that a small deformation of a fillable \(X^{2n-1}\) be fillable.
