Let \(p\) be a prime number and \(A\) an abelian variety over \(\mathbb{Q}_p\). The Tate module of \(A\) is defined as \(T_p(A)=\projlim_n A[p^n](\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p)\), where \(A[p^n]\) denotes the \(p^n\) torsion in \(A\). It is free over \(\mathbb{Z}_p\) of rank \(2\dim(A)\) and carries a continuous action of \(G_p=\text{ Gal}({\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p}/{\mathbb Q}_p)\). Tensoring with \(\mathbb{Q}_p\) we obtain a \(p\)-adic representation \(V_p(A)\) associated to \(A\). The author is interested in intrinsically classifying all representations that are of the form \(V_p(A)\) for some abelian variety \(A\). The paper answers this question for representations that become crystalline over a finite tame extension of \(\mathbb{Q}_p\). With this condition, one should be looking for representations of the form \(V_p(A)\) for abelian varieties \(A\) which have potential good reduction. The author shows that a multiple of a Galois representation \(V\) satisfies the above if four conditions are satisfied. These conditions are described in terms of \(D_{\text{crys}}(V^*)\) and the Weil representation attached to \(V\), and are inspired by the following properties of the sought after abelian variety: the Weil conjectures, rationality of the characteristic polynomial of Frobenius acting on the Tate module of \(A\), the existence of \(\lambda\)-Weil pairings, and finally that the Hodge-Tate weights of \(A\) are \(0,1\).
