    Let \(\varphi\) be a continuous nonnegative and nondecreasing function on \([0,\infty)\) with \(\varphi(0)=0\), and \(\varphi(2t)\leq C\varphi(t)\) \((t>0)\). For a weight in the Muckenhoupt's \(A_\infty\) class, one says that a locally integrable function \(f\) belongs to \(\text{BMO}_\varphi(w)\) if \[ w(Q(x,r))^{-1}\int_{Q(x,r)} | f(y)-f_{Q(x,r)}| \,dy\leq C\varphi(r) \] for every cube \({Q(x,r)}\), where \(f_{Q}=| Q| ^{-1}\int_Q f(y)\,dy\). A function \(f\) is said to belong to the \((w,\varphi)\)-Lipschitz space \(\Lambda_\varphi(w)\) if \[ | f(x)-f(y)| \leq C(wx)+w(y))\varphi(| x-y| ) \text{ a.e. }x,y\in \mathbb R^n. \] It follows that \(\Lambda_\varphi(w)\subset \text{BMO}_\varphi(w)\). The authors give the following characterization of \(\text{BMO}_\varphi(w)\): Suppose \(w\in A_1\). Then \(f\in \text{BMO}_\varphi(w)\) if and only if \(f_Q^\ast(s)\leq C\int_{(s| Q| /Cw(Q))^{1/n}}^{2r_Q}\varphi(t)\,dt/t\) for every \(s\in \mathbb R\) and every cube \(Q\in \mathbb R^n\), where \(f_Q^\ast(s)\) means the nonincreasing rearrangement of \(\chi_Q| f-f_Q| /w\) with respect to the measure induced by \(w\) and \(r_Q\) is the half length edge of \(Q\). They show that if \(\int_0^1\varphi(t)\,dt/t<\infty\) then \(\text{BMO}_\varphi(w)\subset\Lambda_\psi(w)\), with \(\psi(r)=\int_0^r \varphi(t)\,dt/t\). They also give \(\text{BMO}_\varphi(w) =\Lambda_\psi(w)+\sum_{j=1}^{n}{\mathcal R}_j(\Lambda_\psi(w))\) if \(w\) and \(\varphi\) satisfy some additional condition, where \(\mathcal R_j\) is the modified Riesz transform. Their results extend those in the papers [\textit{S. Janson}, Ark. Math. 14, 189--196 (1976; Zbl 0341.43005), and \textit{S. Spanne}, Ann. Scuola Norm. Sup. Pisa, Sci. Fis. Mat., III. Ser. 19, 593--608 (1965; Zbl 0199.44303)].
