Let \(L^2_a(D)\) be the Bergman space of the unit disk \(D\). A closed subspace \(I\) of \(L^2_a(D)\) is called an invariant subspace if it is closed under multiplication by polynomials. If \(I\) is an invariant subspace of \(L^2_a(D)\), then every unit vectors \(f\) in \(X=I\ominus zI\) is an \(L^2_a(D)\)-inner function, that is, \(\langle f,pf\rangle=p(0)\) for every polynomial \(p\). Conversely, if \(X\) is a closed subspace of \(L^2_a(D)\) with each of its unit vectors being an \(L^2_a(D)\)-inner function, then \(X=I\ominus zI\) for some invariant subspace of \(I\) of \(L^2_a(D)\). Such a subspace \(X\) is called an inner space. An inner space \(X\) in \(L^2_a(D)\) is called maximal if it is not a proper subspace of another inner space. The reviewer initiated the study of inner and maximal inner spaces in \(L^2_a(D)\) and obtained several characterizations of maximal inner spaces. The paper under review obtains several more such characterizations.
