The author deals with \({\mathcal I}\)-convergence of elements of a metric space \((X,\rho)\) introduced as follows: Let \({\mathcal I}\subset{\mathcal P}(N)\) be a proper ideal of sets of natural numbers such that each singleton belongs to \({\mathcal I}\). A sequence \((x_n)\) in \((X,\rho)\) is said to be \({\mathcal I}\)-convergent to \(x\in X\) if \(\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \rho(x_n, x)\geq\varepsilon\}\in{\mathcal I}\) for each \(\varepsilon> 0\). The author defines an \({\mathcal I}\)-Cauchy condition for a sequence \((x_n)\) (for each \(\varepsilon> 0\) there exists \(k\in\mathbb{N}\) such that \(\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \rho(x_n, x_k)\geq \varepsilon\}\in{\mathcal I}\)) and proves: (1) If \((X,\rho)\) is a complete space then every \({\mathcal I}\)-Cauchy sequence in \(X\) is \({\mathcal I}\)-convergent in \(X\); (2) If every \({\mathcal I}\)-Cauchy sequence in \(X\) is \({\mathcal I}\)-convergent in \(X\) then \(X\) is complete. \({\mathcal I}\)-convergence and \({\mathcal I}\)-Cauchy condition for double sequences are also investigated.
