Let \((X,d_X)\) and \((Y,d_Y)\) be metric spaces and \(f:X\to Y\). Let \(M: (0,\infty)^2\to (0,\infty)\). By \(A_M(X,Y)\) the authors denote the family of all functions \(f\in Y^X\) satisfying the condition: given \(\varepsilon> 0\), there exists \(\delta: X\to(0,\infty)\) such that for all \(x_1\), \(x_2\) in \(X\), \(d_X(x_1,x_2)< M(\delta(x_1),\delta(x_2))\) implies \(d_Y(f(x_1), f(x_2))< \varepsilon\). In the paper relations among families \(A_M(X,Y)\), the Baire class one functions and the continuous functions are investigated. The paper was motivated by the paper of \textit{P.-Y. Lee}, \textit{W.-K. Tang} and \textit{D. Zhao} [``An equivalent definition of functions of the first Baire class'', Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 129, No. 8, 2273--2275 (2001; Zbl 0970.26004)] where an equivalent condition, of an \(\varepsilon-\delta\) type, for a function \(f\) to be of the first Baire class is given.
