Let \(G\) be a simply connected semisimple complex algebraic group. The authors construct a model for finite-dimensional representations of \(G\), similar to the path model introduced by the second author [Invent. Math. 116, 329--346 (1994; Zbl 0805.17019)]. Instead of paths, they consider the so-called galleries in the affine building associated to \(G\), i.e., the sequences of alcoves, such that two consecutive alcoves have at least a codimension 1 face in common. For a given dominant cocharacter \(\lambda\), a gallery \(\gamma_{\lambda}\) joining 0 and \(\lambda\) is fixed, and a special set \(\Gamma_{LS}(\gamma_{\lambda})\) of the so-called LS galleries (or Lakshmibai-Seshadri galleries) is defined. These LS galleries are vertices of a graph which is isomorphic to the crystal graph of the irreducible representation \(V_{\lambda}\) with highest weight \(\lambda\) of the Langlands dual group \(G^{\vee}\). An analogue of the path character formula for \(V_{\lambda}\) is proved. Cocharacters can be viewed as points of the affine Grassmannian \(\mathcal G = G(\mathbf C(t))/G(\mathbf C[[t]])\). Another result is a correspondence between the LS galleries and the algebraic cycles in a desingularization of the variety \(X_{\lambda} = \overline{G(\mathbf C[[t]])(\lambda)}\subset\mathcal G\) which were constructed by \textit{I. Mirković} and \textit{K. Vilonen} [Math. Res. Lett. 7, 13--24 (2000; Zbl 0987.14015)] and form a basis of the representation space \(V(\lambda)\) realized as the intersection homology of \(X_{\lambda}\).
