For \(k\) a field, the continuous dual \(k[x]^0\) has been identified by the reviewer and \textit{B. Peterson} [Aequationes Math. 20, 1-17 (1980; Zbl 0434.16008)] as linearly recursive sequences over \(k\) and studied as a Hopf algebra with \(k\) primitive. The reviewer and \textit{R. G. Larson} [Isr. J. Math. 72, No. 1/2, 118-132 (1990; Zbl 0729.11007)] studied \(k[x]^0\) as bialgebra with \(x\) group-like, and the birecursive linearly recursive sequences \(k[x,x^{(-1)}]^0\) as Hopf algebra with \(x\) group-like. The reviewer extended this latter study to the multivariable case [Discrete Math. 139, No. 1-3, 393-397 (1995; Zbl 0824.11007)], where the role of a cofinite ideal in the single variable case is replaced by that of an elementary cofinite ideal. These ideas were generalized to a commutative base ring \(R\) and an \(R\)-module \(M\) by \textit{V. L. Kurakin}, \textit{A. S. Kuzmin}, \textit{A. V. Mikhalev} and \textit{A. A. Nechaev} [e.g., J. Math. Sci., New York 76, No. 6, 2793-2915 (1995; Zbl 0859.11001)]. These ideas were also studied by the author in his thesis [exposed in \textit{J. Y. Abuhlail}, \textit{J. Gómez-Torrecillas}, and \textit{R. Wisbauer}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 153, No. 2, 107-120 (2000; Zbl 0980.16030)]. The paper under review claims to generalize this to non-commutative rings \(A\) and their modules \(M\). Although there are general definitions given for \(A^0\), where \(A\) is an \(R\)-algebra, and for \(M^0\), the cases discussed are where \(A=R[x]\) or \(A=R[x,x^{(-1)}]\), both commutative. Things go best when \(A\) satisfies some topological cofinite type conditions, and sometimes \(R\) needs to be Artinian. The results obtained parallel those obtained in the cited work of the reviewer and his colleagues, of Kurakin and his colleagues, and of the author.
