This paper is motivated by the search for a separable infinite-dimensional Banach space on which every bounded operator has a non-trivial invariant subspace. The authors prove the following result: If \(T\) is a strictly singular one-to-one operator on an infinite-dimensional Banach space \(X\) then, for every infinite-dimensional subspace \(Y\) of \(X\), there exists an infinite-dimensional subspace \(Z\) of \(X\) such that \(Z \cap Y\) is also infinite-dimensional, the restriction of \(T\) to \(Z\) is a compact operator and \(Z\) contains orbits of \(T\) of arbitrary finite length.
