The duality of orbits on flag manifolds is studied starting from the connection between arbitrary \(K_{\mathbb C}\)-orbits and Schubert cells. A connected complex semisimple Lie group \(G_{\mathbb C}\) is considered and one denotes by \(K_{\mathbb C}\) the complexification in \(G_{\mathbb C}\) of a maximal compact subgroup \(K\) of \(G_{\mathbb R}\) (a connected real form of \(G_{\mathbb C}\)). A flag manifold of \ \(G_{\mathbb C}\) is defined as \(X=G_{\mathbb C}/P\), where \(P\) is an arbitrary parabolic subgroup of \(G_{\mathbb C}\). Then, the subset \(C(S)=\{ x\in G_{\mathbb C}\mid xS\cap S'\) is non-empty and compact in \(X=G_{\mathbb C}/P\}\) is defined, where \(S\) is a \(K_{\mathbb C}\)-orbit and S' is a \(G_{\mathbb R}\)-orbit on \(X\). The properties of \(C(S)\) are studied through the connections that exist between different \(K_{\mathbb C}\)-orbits. It is shown that Schubert cells are very efficient for such considerations. They give the possibility to obtain important informations about \(C(S)\) from the consideration of the simplest \(S\). The connections between \(K_{\mathbb C}\)-orbits and Schubert cells are emphasized and some examples of applications are given.
