This paper gives a natural extension of the classical definition of Cesàro convergence for sequences and functions. The author describes a Cesàro operator on a certain space of sequences or functions, and uses properties of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors to define his new notion of convergence. As an application he demonstrates the analytic continuation of \(\zeta(s)\) to \(\mathbb{C}\setminus\{1\}\), directly from the series \(\sum^\infty_1 n^{-s}\).
