For classical real Lie groups, the annihilators and associated varieties of the derived functor modules cohomologically induced from the trivial representation are computed. It is also proved that every complex special orbit has a real form that is a nilpotent orbit arising as such an associated variety (this real form is called Richardson orbit). As a consequence, many new infinite families of simple highest weight modules with irreducible associated varieties are given. The analogous computations for singular derived functor modules in the weakly fair range and a method to detect non-normality of complex nilpotent orbit closures are sketched.
