The authors analyze the chaotic behaviour of certain linear shifts on weighted \(\ell_\infty\)-spaces. The study of chaotic linear maps on infinite-dimensional spaces is a well-established area of research which has experimented a great development during the last years. The surveys of \textit{K.-G. Grosse-Erdmann} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 36, 345--381 (1999; Zbl 0933.47003), RACSAM, Rev. R. Acad. Cienc. Exactas Fís. Nat., Ser. A Mat. 97, No. 2, 273--286 (2003; Zbl 1076.47005)] and \textit{J. Bonet, F. Martínez-Giménez} and \textit{A. Peris} [Int. J. Bifurcation Chaos Appl. Sci. Eng. 13, No. 7, 1649--1655 (2003; Zbl 1079.47008)] contain most of the recent advances in this topic. The interest on chaos for (weighted and un-weighted) shifts on sequence spaces was initiated with the work of \textit{S. Rolewicz} [Stud. Math. 32, 17--22 (1969; Zbl 0174.44203)] in which hypercyclic shifts (that is, linear maps admitting vectors whose orbits are dense in the whole space) on \(\ell_p\) and \(c_0\) spaces were obtained. \textit{H. N. Salas} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 347, 993--1004 (1995; Zbl 0822.47030)] characterized completely the hypercyclic shifts on these spaces. An extension to more general sequence spaces can be found in \textit{K.-G. Grosse-Erdmann} [Stud. Math. 139, No.~1, 47--68 (2000; Zbl 0991.47013)] and \textit{F. Martínez-Giménez} and \textit{A. Peris} [Int. J. Bifurcation Chaos Appl. Sci. Eng. 12, No. 8, 1703--1715 (2002; Zbl 1070.47024)]. In the paper under review, the authors prove the existence of compact invariant subspaces \(\Lambda\) such that the restriction \(T| _\Lambda\) of the planar shift \(T\) is chaotic in the sense of \textit{R. L. Devaney} [An introduction to chaotic dynamical systems, 2nd ed. (Addison-Wesley, Redwood City/CA) (1989; Zbl 0695.58002)]. Other properties, like topologically mixing and non-chaotic but sensitive \(T| _\Lambda\) with a dense set of periodic points are also studied.
