Hortensius (1605--1639) was a Dutch mathematican. Descartes called him ignorant, but many other contemporaries appreciated his learning. Remmert discusses Hortensius' inaugural lecture at the Atheneum Illustre in Amsterdam. In the lecture no argument supporting the delightfulness, dignity, utility and antiquity of mathematics seems to be missing.
