Let \(Y\) be a projective complex smooth variety and \(X\) a Zariski open subset of \(Y\) whose complement is a normal-crossings divisor, \(E\) a holomorphic vector bundle on \(X\) equipped with a Higgs bundle structure and a pluriharmonic metric. A deep study of the relations between Higgs structures and flat structures was given by C. Simpson in [\textit{C. Simpson} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 1, 867--918 (1988; Zbl 0669.58008) and J. Am. Math. Soc. 3, 713--770 (1990; Zbl 0713.58012)]. Here the author shows that the asymptotic behaviour is similar to the one of complex variations of polarized Hodge structures, when the harmonic bundle is tame and nilpotent with the trivial parabolic structure. For instance, he proves the constantness of general monodromy weight filtrations, the compatibility of the filtrations, norm estimates, and the purity theorem. For that purpose he obtains a limiting mixed twistor structure from a tame nilpotent harmonic bundle with trivial parabolic structure on a puntured disc. This paper solves a conjecture of Simpson. To quote from the Mathematical Review of C. Simpson: ``This important paper breaks an impasse which had blocked development of the theory for more than a decade ''. For further works of the author, see [\textit{T. Mochizuki}, Algebr. Geom. Topol. 5, 183--205 (2005)] and the e-print on arXiv math.DG/0312230, math.DG0411300, math.DG/0402122.
