The author derives conditions which are sufficient in order that \(L^2(0,1)\) has a Riesz basis consisting of eigenfunctions of the nonlinear eigenvalue problem \[ u''-q(u,\lambda,x)+\lambda u=0, \quad x\in (0,1),\qquad u(0) = 0 = u(1). \] Key tools for the proof are the successive approximation method and oscillation theory. A sufficient condition is that each of the following four statements holds: (1) \(q\) is continuous for all sufficiently small \(|u|\). (2) \(q\) is bounded for all sufficently small \(|u|\). (3) \(q\) is Lipschitz continuous in \(u\) for all sufficiently small \(|u|\) with a Lipschitz constant depending only on \(\lambda\) (not on \(x\)). (4) The partial derivative w.r.t. \(\lambda\) is identically zero for \(u = 0\).
