\textit{L. S. Koplienko} [Sib. Math. J. 25, 735--743 (1984); translation from Sib. Mat. Zh. 25, No. 5 (147), 62--71 (1984; Zbl 0574.47021)] found a trace formula for perturbations of self-adjoint operators by operators of the Hilbert-Schmidt class. A similar formula in the case of unitary operators was obtained by \textit{H. Neidhardt} [Math. Nachr. 138, 7--25 (1988; Zbl 0674.47003)]. In the present paper, the author extends their results to a considerably bigger class of functions and obtains sharp conditions under which the Koplienko--Neidhardt trace formulae hold.
