The authors study the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the following class of chemotaxis equations: \[ \frac{\partial p}{\partial t}(x,t)=D\nabla \left(p(x,t)\nabla \left(\ln\left(\frac{p(x,t)}{\phi(x,t,w)}\right)\right)\right), \quad (x,t)\in\Omega\times(0,T)=:Q_T, \] \[ \frac{\partial w}{\partial t}(x,t)=F(x,t,p(x,t),w(x,t)), \quad (x,t)\in Q_T, \] \[ p(x,t)\nabla \left(\ln\left(\frac{p(x,t)}{\phi(x,t,w)}\right)\right)\cdot n(x)=0, \quad (x,t)\in\partial\Omega\times(0,T), \] \[ p(x,0)=p_0(x)>0,\;w(x,0)=w_0(x)\text{ and }\phi(x,0,w(x,0))=\phi(x,0,w_0(x))>0,\text{ for }x\in\overline{\Omega}. \] Here \(\Omega\) denotes an open connected bounded subset of \(\mathbb R^N\) with boundary \(\partial\Omega\), and the functions \(\phi(x,t,q):\overline{Q}_T\times U_T\rightarrow\mathbb R\) and \(F(x,t,v,q):\overline{Q}_T\times\Lambda_T\times U_T\rightarrow\mathbb R^m\) are continuous and possess contiuous derivatives up to third order. Here \(U_T\subset\mathbb R^m\) and \(\Lambda_T\subset\mathbb R\). Using classical results for quasilinear parabolic equations by \textit{O. A. Ladyzhenskaya, V. A. Solonnikov} and \textit{N. N. Ural'tseva} [Linear and quasi-linear equations of parabolic type.Translations of Mathematical Monographs. 23. American Mathematical Society (AMS). (1968; Zbl 0174.15403)] and some ``structural'' conditions on the functionals \(F\) and \(\phi\), the authors establish the existence of classical solutions, if the boundary of \(\Omega\) is smooth enough. Furthermore, they show that there exist three possible situations for the given system. Either the solution exists globally in time, or there exists a finite time \(T^\ast\) such that one of the functions \(p\) and \(w\) blows up at time \(T^\ast\), or there exists a \(x\in\overline{\Omega}\) such that either \[ \lim_{T\nearrow T^\ast} \text{dist} \left(w(x,T),\left(\overline{U}_T\setminus U_T\right)\right)=0\quad\text{for }x\in\overline{\Omega} \] or \[ \lim_{T\nearrow T^\ast} \text{dist} \left(p(x,T),\left(\overline{\Lambda}_T\setminus \Lambda_T\right)\right)=0 \quad\text{for }x\in\overline{\Omega}. \] The paper ends with some concrete examples for systems belonging to the considered class.
