The authors consider an inverse spectral problem for a quadratic matrix pencil \(Q\) of the form \(Q(\lambda)=\lambda^2I_n+\lambda B+C\), where \(I_n\) is the identity matrix and \(B\) and \(C\) are Jacobi matrices of order \(n\). Denote by \(Q_1\) the quadratic matrix pencil obtained from \(Q\) by deleting its last row and its last column. Given two monic polynomials \(P_{2n}\) and \(P_{2n-2}\) of degree \(2n\) and \(2n-2\), respectively, the main problem is the determination of necessary and sufficient conditions under which there is an \(n\times n\) quadratic Jacobi matrix pencil \(Q\) such that \(P_{2n}=\det Q\) and \(P_{2n-2}=\det Q_1\).
