Let \(A\) be a finite-dimensional algebra and let \(X\) and \(Y\) be finitely generated \(A\)-modules with the same dimension vectors, that is with the same composition factors and multiplicities. Then \(X\) and \(Y\) are points in an algebraic variety, which is acted upon by an algebraic group, whose orbits are isomorphism classes of modules. By definition, \(X\) degenerates to \(Y\) if the closure of the orbit of \(X\) contains \(Y\). Extending earlier work of Bongartz and of Riedtmann, \textit{G. Zwara} [Compos. Math. 121, 205--218 (2000; Zbl 0957.16007)] has characterised the partial order given by degeneration in term of the existence of certain exact sequences. Here, a similar result is shown for the category of right bounded complexes of projective modules. In this situation, quasi-isomorphisms are just homotopy equivalences. Fixing dimension arrays, such complexes are points in inverse limits of affine varieties, which are acted upon by inverse limits of algebraic groups. Zwara's result is shown to carry over to this situation.
