    Let \(L\) be a bounded operator from the Banach space \(X\) to the Banach space \(Y\) and let \(M\) be a closed, densely-defined and \((L,p)\)-sectorial operator such that \(\sigma^L(M) \cap \{i{\mathbb R}\} = \emptyset\). Then we have the existence of the projections \[ P_+ = \int_{\Gamma_+} (\mu L - M)^{-1}L\, d\mu , \qquad Q_+ = \int_{\Gamma_+} L\,(\mu L - M)^{-1}\, d\mu , \] where \(\Gamma_+\) is a closed contour lying in the plane \(\Re \mu > 0\) and containing the set \(\Re \sigma^L > 0\). Moreover, if \(M\) is strongly \((L,p)\)-sectorial, then there exist projections \(P\) and \(Q\) such that \[ P_+P = PP_+ = P_+, \qquad Q_+Q = QQ_+ = Q_+. \] For a fixed \(T > 0\), the authors address the following Verigin's problem: \[ L\dot u(t) = Mu(t) + f(t), \qquad P_-u(0) = u_0, \quad P_+u(T) = u_T, \] where \(P_- = P-P_+\) and \(f : [0,T] \to Y\), \(u_0 \in X\), \(u_T \in X\) are assigned. The solution \(u\) is sought in \(C\left([0,T];X\right) \cap C^1\left((0,T);X\right)\). It is worth noting that in all the previous studies of Verigin's problem, the projections \(P\) and \(P_+\) were constructed on the basis of the spectrum of \(L\) and not of the \(L\)-spectrum of \(M\), as in the present case. The above problem is shown to have a unique solution under suitable, but fairly general, assumptions. Such well-posedness result is eventually applied, for the sake of example, to a problem of free-surface evolution of a filtered liquid as well as to a Benard-like problem.
