The classical theory of integration of scalar functions with respect to a vector measure (defined on a \(\sigma\)-algebra) was created by \textit{R. G. Bartle, N. Dunford} and \textit{J. Schwartz} [Can. J. Math. 7, 289--305 (1955; Zbl 0068.09301)] and studied by \textit{D. R. Lewis} [Pac. J. Math. 33, 157--165 (1970; Zbl 0195.14303)]. It led to the study of the corresponding spaces of integrable functions by the reviewer [Math. Ann. 293, 317--330 (1992; Zbl 0735.46033)], [Pac. J. Math. 162, 287--303 (1994; Zbl 0791.46021)], [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 123, 3797--3806 (1995; Zbl 0848.46015)] and other authors, see, for example, \textit{S. Okada} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 177, 583--599 (1993; Zbl 0804.46049)], \textit{S. Okada, W. J. Ricker} and \textit{L. RodrÃguez-Piazza} [Stud. Math. 150, 133--149 (2002; Zbl 0998.28009)]. The extension of the integration theory to vector measures defined over \(\delta\)-rings was done by \textit{D. R. Lewis} [Ill. J. Math. 16, 294--307 (1972; Zbl 0242.28008)] and \textit{P. R. Masani} and \textit{H. Niemi} [Adv. Math. 73, 204--241 (1989; Zbl 0684.28002)], [Adv. Math. 75, 121--167 (1989; Zbl 0770.28007)]. The paper under review studies the space of integrable functions with respect to a vector measure (with values in a Banach space) defined on a \(\delta\)-ring. There are substantial differences with the case of measures defined on a \(\sigma\)-algebra. The relation between the analytic properties of the vector measure (strong additivity, \(\sigma\)-finiteness, existence of a control measure) and the lattice properties of the space of integrable functions are studied in detail. One of the main applications of the integration with respect to vector measures is the identification of optimal domains for operators between function spaces; see \textit{G. P. Curbera} and \textit{W. J. Ricker} [Math. Nachr. 244, 47--63 (2002; Zbl 1027.47023)] and \textit{S. Okada} and \textit{W. J. Ricker} [Integral Equations Oper.\ Theory 48, 525--546 (2004; Zbl 1071.47024)]. The paper under review considers examples of the measures arising from certain classical operators on the real line (Hilbert transform, Volterra convolution operator), which could not be treated via the integration theory for measures on a \(\sigma\)-algebra.
