Let \(R\) be a nil ring and \(I\) an ideal in \(R[x]\). The following results are proved. 1. If \(I\) is primitive then \(I=I'[x]\) for some ideal \(I'\) in \(R\). 2. Let \(\overline I\) be the ideal of \(R\) generated by the coefficients of the polynomials from \(I\). Then \(R[x]/I\) is Jacobson radical iff \(R[x]/\overline I[x]\) is Jacobson radical. From this and \textit{J. Krempa}'s result [Fundam. Math. 76, 121--130 (1972; Zbl 0236.16004)] we get: 3. The Köthe conjecture is equivalent to the statement ``polynomial rings (in one indeterminate) over nil rings are not right primitive''.
