Here the author gives a factorization of the Alexander polynomial \(\Delta _B(t)\) of an ample irreducible divisor \(B\) on a smooth projective surface (and hence an upper bound for \(\Delta _B(t)\)), which improves (even in the plane case) the bound of \textit{A. Libgober } [Duke Math. J. 49, 833--951 (1982; Zbl 0524.14026)]. His factorization is over the singular points of \(B\), some of them counting nothing. His set-up uses \textit{M. V. Nori} [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. 16, 305--344 (1983; Zbl 0527.14016)]: roughly speaking, only the singular points of \(B\) which are in excess of the hypothesis of Nori's theorem may affect \(\Delta _B(t)\).
