The two-scale difference equations of the form \[ \lambda \psi \left(\frac t\alpha \right)\sum_{\upsilon =0}^\infty d_\upsilon \psi (t-\upsilon ),\quad t\in {\mathbb R}\tag{*} \] is considered with complex coefficients \(d_\upsilon\) where \(\lambda d_0\neq 0\) and a dilation parameter \(\alpha >1.\) The formal series \(T(w)=\sum_{\upsilon =0}^\infty d_\upsilon w^\upsilon\) is called the symbol of (*). By considering (*) as an eigenvalue problem where the solutions (eigenfunctions) are either compactly supported or integrals of compactly supported distributions, the author determines the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of eigenfunctions that the symbol must be a rational function with a special structure depending on \(\alpha\). It is shown that the eigenfunctions can be expressed by means of a finite sum of shifted eigenfunctions belonging to the case with a polynomial symbol which is well investigated. Several examples are considered.
