\textit{P. Corvaja} and \textit{U. Zannier} [C. R., Math., Acad. Sci. Paris 334, No. 4, 267--271 (2002; Zbl 1012.11051)] were the first to study integral points on algebraic varieties using Schmidt's subspace theorem in Diophantine approximation, which corresponds to Cartan's second main theorem in Nevanlinna theory. Since the appearance of the paper by Corvaja and Zannier [loc. cit.], there has been significant progress in extending the second main theorem to holomorphic mappings from the complex plane into an arbitrary projective variety intersecting general divisors by using methods related to Cartan's second main theorem. The paper under review is a survey, which gives a systematic study of such an approach, including recent important developments in this direction in a broad sense.
