A sequence $(x_n)^{\infty}_{n=1}$ on the torus is said to exhibit Poissonian pair correlation if the local gaps behave like a Poissonian random variable. The main result is an upper bound for the discrepancy of the sequence $(x_{n})^{\infty}_{n=1}$ provided that the sequence has the Poissonian property \[ \frac{1}{N}\sharp \left\{1\leq m \neq n \leq N : \mid x_{m} - x _{n}\mid \leq \frac{s}{N}\right\}= \leq 2s \] for all $1\leq s \leq \frac{8}{\delta}\sqrt{\log N}$. \par The proofs use a connection between exponential sums, the heat kernel and spatial localization. The paper also contains various interesting open problems. For related results we refer to the recent work of \textit{C. Aistleitner} et al. [J. Number Theory 182, 206--220 (2018; Zbl 1415.11106)].
