If \(I\) is a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring \(R=k[X_1,\ldots, X_d]\) over a field \(k\), Reid, Roberts and Vitulli [\textit{L. Reid} et al., Commun. Algebra 31, No. 9, 4485--4506 (2003; Zbl 1021.13008)] proved that if the powers \(I,I^2,\ldots, I^{d-1}\) are integrally closed, then \(I\) is normal, i.e., all the powers of \(I\) are integrally closed. The result was later improved by \textit{P. Singla} [Ill. J. Math. 51, No. 4, 1085--1102 (2007; Zbl 1151.13011)] who showed that it is enough to assume that the powers \(I,I^2, \ldots, I^{\ell -1}\) are integrally closed, where \(\ell=\ell(I)\) is the analytic spread of \(I\). (It is known that \(\ell(I)\) is always less than or equal to \(d\).) In a different direction, a generalization of the same result was obtained by \textit{P. Sarkar} and \textit{J. K. Verma} [Nagoya Math. J. 228, 1--20 (2017; Zbl 1408.13051)] who showed that if \(I_1,\ldots, I_r\) are monomial ideals that are primary to the maximal ideal \((X_1,\ldots, X_d)\) and \(\mathbf{I}^{\mathbf{n}}=I_1^{n_1}\cdots I_r^{n_r}\) is integrally closed for all \(\mathbf{n}=(n_1,\ldots, n_r)\) with \(|\mathbf{n}| \leq d-1\), then all the power products \(\mathbf{I}^{\mathbf{n}}\) are integrally closed. Inspired by the approach of Sarkar and Verma who used the local cohomology of the multi-Rees algebra \(\mathcal{R}(\mathbf{I})=R[I_1t_1,\ldots, I_r t_r]\) and its normalization \(\overline{\mathcal R }(\mathbf{I})\), the author extends the above results to monomial ideals that are not necessarily primary to the maximal ideal \((X_1,\ldots, X_d)\). More precisely, it is proved that if \(I_1,\ldots, I_r\) are monomial ideals and the powers \(\mathbf{I}^{\mathbf{n}}\) are integrally closed for all \(\mathbf{n}\) with \(|\mathbf{n}| \leq \ell(I_1\cdots I_r) - 1\), then all the power products \(\mathbf{I}^{\mathbf{n}}\) are integrally closed. In fact, the author obtains an even more general result for ideals in a local ring that requires that the normalization \(\overline{\mathcal R }(\mathbf{I})\) be a module-finite extension of \({\mathcal R }(\mathbf{I})\) and Cohen-Macaulay. The proof relies on a technical result regarding the asymptotic vanishing of the homogeneous components of a multi-graded module.
