Let \(D\) be a smooth bounded strictly convex domain in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) for \(n\geq3\) and let \(\phi\) be a \(C^2\) function on the boundary. Let \(A\) be an \(n\times n\) symmetric unimodular positive definite matrix and let \(b\) be given. Previous work by \textit{L. Caffarelli} and \textit{Y. Li} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 56, No. 5, 549--583 (2003; Zbl 1236.35041)] showed there exists a constant \(c_1=c_1(n,D,\phi,A,b)\) such that if \(c>c_1\), then there exists a unique solution \(u\) which is smooth on the complement of \(D\) and continuous on the closure of the boundary satisfying the Monge-Ampère equation \(\det(D^2u)=1\) on the complement of \(D\) with \(u=\phi\) on the boundary and with asymptotic behaviour \[ \lim_{|x|\rightarrow\infty}|u(x)-(\frac12 x^tAx+bx+c)|=0\,. \] In the current paper, the authors show that there is a sharp constant \(C_*\) so that solutions exist for \(c\geq C_*\) and do not exist otherwise. The authors also prove a similar result for viscosity solutions. The main contribution is to give a complete characterization of the existence and non-existence of solutions to the exerior Dirichlet problem based on their asymptotic behavior; the interior problem is quite different.
