The main aim of the present paper is the study of torsion theories induced by recollements of abelian categories. Let $(\mathcal{A}, \mathcal{B}, \mathcal{C})$ be a recollement of abelian categories, where $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are treated as full subcategories of $\mathcal{B}$. In Theorem 1 it is proved that if we have a torsion theory in $\mathcal{A}$ and a torsion theory in $\mathcal{C}$ then these data can be glued to obtain in a natural way a torsion theory in $\mathcal{B}$. Moreover, the glued torsion theory preserve under some mild hypotheses some properties of the initial torsion theories. Conversely, it is proved in Theorem 2 that the torsion pairs in $\mathcal{B}$ induce torsion pairs in $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{C}$.
