This very nice book concerns boundary layer solutions to singularly perturbed boundary and initial-boundary value problems. The equations are of reaction-diffusion or convection-diffusion type, and the main application is the convergence, for viscosity going to zero, of boundary layer solutions to the Navier-Stokes system to those of the Euler system. For all equations and systems the topics are the same: \(\bullet\) construction of inner and outer expansions of approximate boundary layer solutions of any order; \(\bullet\) estimation of the rate of convergence to zero of the difference of approximate and exact boundary layer solutions (in Sobolev spaces of appropriate order). The schedule is consequently realized in the following chapters for the following topics: Chapter 1: 1D linear reaction-diffusion equations with constant coefficients and convection-diffusion equations with space-dependent convection coefficient. Chapter 2: 2D linear elliptic problems in channels (periodic boundary conditions in one dimension and Dirichlet boundary conditions in the other dimension). Chapter 3: 2D an 3D linear elliptic and parabolic problems in general curved domains (curvilinear coordinates near the boundary). Chapter 4: 2D linear elliptic equations in rectangular domains (corner layers and turning points). Chapter 5: 2D linear elliptic equations in circular domains (characteristic point layers). Chapter 6: 3D Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems in channels with small viscosity. Boundary conditions of no-slip type, non-characteristic type an of Navier-friction type. Chapter 7: 3D Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems in general curved domains.
