In this notice to the D.M.V. (German Mathematical Society), the author explains some aspects of the work of fields medalist Peter Scholze to a general mathematical audience. The focus is on explaining the idea behind the concept of a perfectoid space and the revolutionary impact that perfectoid spaces have had on arithmetic geometry. The article explains how perfectoid spaces build a bridge between geometry in characterstic \(0\) and in characteristic \(p\). The main structure of this bridge is the so called tilting formalism. The author conveys the essential features of this formalism in a non-technical way, thereby giving a very nice introduction to the subject. He then discusses two major applications of the theory of perfectoid spaces: They have been used to attach representations of Galois groups to the cohomology of locally symmetric spaces and to construct a new cohomology theory for compact smooth \(p\)-adic spaces with good reductions that unifies previous cohomology theories.
