Starting from the result by \textit{E. Calabi} and \textit{J. Cao} [J. Differ. Geom. 36, No. 3, 517--549 (1992; Zbl 0768.53019)], that a closed geodesic of least length in a two-sphere with nonnegative curvature is always simple, and using Almgren-Pitts' min-max theory, the authors prove (without assumptions on the curvature) the following: Theorem 1. Let $(M^{n+1}, g)$ be a closed manifold with $2\le n \le 6$, then there exists a least-area closed minimal hypersurface $\Sigma\subset M$ and any such $\Sigma$ is embedded. As an application, they prove (in Theorem 2) that if $(M^{n+1}; g)$ is a closed manifold with scalar curvature at least 6, not isometric to the unit three-sphere, then $M$ contains an embedded closed minimal surface of area less than $4\pi$. This confirms a conjecture of \textit{F. C. Marques} and \textit{A. Neves} [Duke Math. J. 161, No. 14, 2725--2752 (2012; Zbl 1260.53079)].
